Diabetes trouble with the way his digested food

A person with diabetes will have trouble with the way his digested food uses glucose to provide energy and growth. Most of the food we eat is broken down into glucose, the form of sugar in the blood. Diabetes stops this energy supply and forces it to remain in the blood creating further problems.

If this situation remains unchecked, levels of glucose in the blood increase to dangerous levels. Information in this article is regarding the two major types of diabetes.

Mainly affecting children and young adults, type 1 diabetes or juvenile onset diabetes occurs when insulin production stops completely and affected individuals must take insulin daily to survive. The second type is called adult onset diabetes and happens later in life when either not enough insulin is being produced or it isn’t being used properly but can normally be treated through diet.

Without insulin the glucose cannot be used by the body to be converted into energy. Those energy foods which we all need to live are pasta, rice, potatoes, bread and fruit of course.

Having high levels of glucose in your blood that is not entering the cells will over long periods, cause a number of serious conditions including blindness, amputations, heart and kidney conditions. Good diabetes care and management can prevent or delay the onset of these complications.

It is possible to live a relatively normal life provided you stick to the plan laid out by your doctor but it means sticking to things like your medication, watching blood sugar, cholesterol an blood fat levels and stop smoking. You will also need to maintain your weight, and maintain your blood pressure to within the guidelines set by your doctor.

The USA is particularly badly hit with diabetes, which is a life long condition, with over 5.5 million sufferers. Studies suggest that it is not the wholes story as experts believe that there as many people again that have the disease that have not yet been diagnosed combined with the fact that around 600,000 US citizens contract diabetes each year you can see the problem is serious. It is a worrying fact that whilst 34,000 American citizens die each year from diabetes that another 320,000 die that have diabetes but may die of an associated condition.
