Diabetic Unchecked Levels of Glucose in the Blood
Diabetes is a disorder of metabolism the way our bodies use digested food for growth and energy. Almost all the food we eat, once digested, is converted into glucose. This glucose is our primary source of fuel but the condition of diabetes means that the glucose does not travel around the body properly.
If this situation remains unchecked, levels of glucose in the blood increase to dangerous levels. Two main types of diabetes occur; information on both is looked at briefly here.
Mainly affecting children and young adults, type 1 diabetes or juvenile onset diabetes occurs when insulin production stops completely and affected individuals must take insulin daily to survive. Type 2 diabetes also called adult onset diabetes or non insulin dependent diabetes results when the body either cannot produce enough insulin or does not use the insulin it makes properly.
Insulin helps glucose enter the body’s cells, where it can be used for energy or stored for future use. We all eat foods that are rich in energy which the body uses to convert into sugar for energy like pasta, potatoes, bread, rice and fruit.
Some serious conditions can result from excess levels of glucose in the blood including blindness, heart and kidney disease and even the removal of limbs. Good diabetes care and management can prevent or delay the onset of these complications.
Managing diabetes means changing your lifestyle to suit your condition like steadily maintaining levels of your blood sugar, cholesterol and blood fat along with any medication that has been prescribed plus give up cigarettes. You will also need to maintain your weight, and maintain your blood pressure to within the guidelines set by your doctor.
Once you have been diagnosed with diabetes, you will have it for life and there are currently over five and half million Americans who have been diagnosed with diabetes which is over 2.5 percent of the population. The frightening think is that it is estimated that at least the same number of people have diabetes but just don’ know it yet but there are more than 600,000 new cases every year. It is a worrying fact that whilst 34,000 American citizens die each year from diabetes that another 320,000 die that have diabetes but may die of an associated condition.
